A detailed 17th-century engraving by Gérard Audran depicting a grand mythological allegory celebrating a royal French wedding.
This engraving by Gérard Audran depicts a grand mythological scene, framing the 1697 marriage of Louis, Duke of Burgundy, and Marie Adélaïde of Savoy. The composition employs a theatrical structure, with heavy curtains draped at the sides to draw the viewer into the central action. The scene is set upon a circular platform where the wedding ceremony takes place, surrounded by a multitude of figures from classical mythology.
Above the central couple, the heavens open to reveal a celestial assembly, bathed in light radiating from a central deity. The use of line work is precise, characteristic of Audran's technical mastery in reproducing complex painterly compositions through the medium of copperplate engraving. The lower portion of the print features an elaborate coat of arms, grounding the ethereal subject matter in the political reality of the French court.
Audran was a prominent engraver of his time, known for his ability to translate the works of painters like Charles Le Brun into print. This work demonstrates the period's preference for complex, multi-layered narratives that blend historical events with divine symbolism. The density of the figures, combined with the architectural elements of the background, creates a sense of immense scale. The print serves as a record of the visual language used to celebrate royal unions during the reign of Louis XIV, where the boundaries between the terrestrial and the divine were intentionally blurred to elevate the status of the monarchy.
