The work depicts the Virgin Mary suspended in a celestial sphere, surrounded by a host of putti, while below her, a group of figures representing humanity before the redemption are caught in a state of spiritual turmoil. The composition is divided into two distinct registers: the divine realm above, bathed in a warm, ethereal light, and the earthly realm below, which is shrouded in shadow and marked by the physical strain of the figures.

Vasari employs the elongated proportions and dramatic, twisting poses characteristic of the Mannerist style. The figures in the lower section are arranged in a dense, interlocking configuration that suggests a struggle against the darkness. This contrast between the serene, elevated Virgin and the agitated, muscular forms of the figures below creates a clear theological narrative regarding the nature of original sin and the promise of salvation.
