The composition centres on the personification of Painting, who is being crowned by a winged figure representing Eternity. The iconography draws upon classical traditions, utilising symbolic elements to convey its message. A cornucopia, filled with fruit, rests beside the central figures, suggesting abundance and the fruits of artistic labour. Below, a putto interacts with a reclining figure, while a spiked board lies on the ground, perhaps referencing the trials or discipline required in the pursuit of artistic excellence.

Dubourg employs a precise etching technique to define the musculature of the figures and the folds of their drapery. The lines are controlled, creating a sense of volume and depth within the scene. The background remains relatively sparse, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the allegorical entities. The Latin inscription at the base, 'Quando est laudis amans, ars propria commo dacalcat', provides a textual key to the visual narrative, linking the act of creation to the desire for recognition and the overcoming of obstacles.
