A complex Mannerist engraving by Giorgio Ghisi, featuring a dense, symbolic narrative of figures and creatures in a rocky, atmospheric setting.
Giorgio Ghisi, a master engraver from Mantua, produced this complex work around 1561. The composition is a dense, symbolic narrative that reflects the intellectual climate of the Italian Renaissance. It draws upon the design of Giovanni Battista Bertani, showcasing the collaborative nature of printmaking during this period. The scene is divided into distinct zones, each populated with figures and creatures that carry moral weight. On the left, an elderly man leans against a rocky outcrop, his gaze directed towards the centre of the composition. Below him, a sea monster emerges from turbulent waters, while a small boat sits abandoned in the foreground. To the right, a female figure stands with poise, holding a staff, surrounded by palm trees and putti.
The background features a jagged mountain range, a distant city, and a rainbow, which adds a sense of atmospheric depth to the otherwise crowded foreground. Ghisi employs a precise, disciplined line technique, typical of his training in the school of Marcantonio Raimondi. Every element, from the texture of the rocks to the folds of the drapery, is rendered with exacting detail. The work functions as a visual puzzle, inviting the viewer to interpret the relationship between the figures and their environment. It is a prime example of the Mannerist interest in artifice, complexity, and the fusion of classical motifs with imaginative, often unsettling, subject matter. The print demonstrates the technical capabilities of the copperplate engraving process, allowing for a level of detail that would be impossible in other media. This piece remains a significant example of sixteenth-century print culture, reflecting the era's fascination with philosophical inquiry and the potential of the printed image to disseminate complex ideas across Europe.
