Pietro da Cortona executed this expansive fresco for the ceiling of the Gran Salone in the Palazzo Barberini, Rome. Commissioned by the Barberini family, specifically Pope Urban VIII, the work functions as a visual panegyric to the papacy. The composition employs a complex arrangement of figures, architectural elements, and clouds to create an illusion of an opening into the heavens.

At the centre, Divine Providence directs Immortality to crown the Barberini coat of arms, which features the family bees. Surrounding this central action are various allegorical figures representing virtues, such as Justice, Prudence, and Temperance, alongside mythological references that reinforce the legitimacy of the Barberini rule. The use of di sotto in su perspective allows the figures to appear as though they are floating above the viewer, a technique that defines the Roman High Baroque style.

Cortona utilised a palette of warm tones, contrasting the golden light of the heavens with the deeper shadows of the surrounding figures. The movement within the scene is constant, with limbs extended and drapery caught in motion, creating a sense of energy that fills the entire ceiling space. The integration of painted architectural frames, or quadratura, further blurs the boundary between the physical room and the depicted celestial realm. This work remains a primary example of how seventeenth-century artists combined classical iconography with theatrical staging to communicate political and religious authority through visual media.
