This work functions as a preparatory study for a cartographic project, specifically a map of the Haut Dauphiné region. The composition integrates geographical information with classical mythology, a common practice in eighteenth-century mapmaking where the borders were decorated with allegorical figures to provide context for the territory.
The scene features river gods and goddesses, traditional personifications of water sources and natural boundaries. These figures are rendered with delicate, fluid lines, typical of Gravelot's draughtsmanship.
