A classical scene by Leonaert Bramer depicting Alexander the Great performing a ritual sacrifice, rendered in ink and wash.
This drawing by Leonaert Bramer depicts a classical scene of sacrifice, where Alexander the Great presents white bulls to a statue of Jupiter. Bramer, a Dutch painter from Delft, is known for his distinct approach to historical and biblical narratives. His style often involves a theatrical use of light and shadow, combined with a fluid, calligraphic line quality that gives his figures a sense of movement and drama.
The composition is structured around a central architectural arch, which frames the ritual taking place before an elevated statue of the deity. Alexander stands to the left, his arms raised in a gesture of reverence, while attendants prepare the garlanded animals for the ceremony. A priest, positioned near an altar, oversees the proceedings. The use of wash on paper creates a soft, atmospheric quality, allowing the figures to emerge from the background with a sense of depth despite the relatively flat, graphic nature of the ink work.
Bramer spent several years in Italy, an experience that informed his interest in classical subjects and the dramatic lighting associated with the Caravaggisti. Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on oil painting, Bramer produced a large volume of drawings, often as independent works rather than mere preparatory studies. This particular piece reflects his interest in the narrative potential of ancient history, rendered with a focus on gesture and the interaction between human figures and their environment. The work remains a fine example of the Dutch Golden Age interest in classical antiquity, interpreted through a personal and highly expressive graphic style.
