This work is a leaf from an album of compositions by Wang Gai, a painter active during the early Qing Dynasty. Wang Gai is recognised for his contributions to the Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting, a pedagogical text that codified techniques for generations of artists. His approach here reflects the literati tradition, which prioritised personal expression and the mastery of brushwork over strict realism.

The composition depicts a small boat navigating through dense, foliage-heavy surroundings. The figures are rendered with minimal, precise strokes, conveying a sense of quiet movement.
