A refined woodblock print from the Ichirō gafu by Yashima Gakutei, depicting a serene rural scene with a boatman and a thatched dwelling.
This woodblock print originates from the Ichirō gafu, an album of works by the Japanese artist Yashima Gakutei. Gakutei was a student of Totoya Hokkei and Katsushika Hokusai, and he became known for his contributions to the surimono genre, which consisted of privately commissioned prints often featuring poetry and refined imagery. This specific composition displays the characteristic line work and balanced spatial arrangement typical of the Edo period.
The image presents a diptych-like view of a rural scene. On the left, a figure navigates a small boat across a body of water, with rolling hills and weeping willow branches framing the upper portion of the frame. On the right, the scene shifts to a thatched-roof dwelling where figures are visible within the interior. The artist employs a delicate, calligraphic line quality to define the textures of the water, the foliage, and the architectural elements. The composition relies on a flat, graphic sensibility, typical of woodblock printing techniques of the era, where depth is suggested through the layering of elements rather than linear perspective.
Gakutei was a versatile artist, active as both a print designer and a poet. His work often reflects the aesthetic values of the literati circles in which he moved. The print demonstrates a restraint in its visual information, focusing on the quiet interaction between human activity and the natural environment. The use of monochrome ink on paper emphasises the clarity of the design and the precision of the carving process. This piece provides a view into the artistic output of the early nineteenth century, capturing a moment of stillness that is characteristic of the period's interest in rural life and poetic observation.
