This work represents the refined calligraphic tradition of the Momoyama period, executed by Konoe Nobutada, a prominent court noble and one of the Sanpitsu, or Three Brushes, of the Kanei era. The piece features bold, expressive ink characters set against a muted blue-grey paper ground, which is decorated with subtle gold-leaf floral motifs. The juxtaposition of the fluid, dark ink strokes with the metallic shimmer of the background creates a balanced visual tension.
Konoe Nobutada was known for his distinct style, which departed from the more rigid, formal scripts of his predecessors. His brushwork displays a sense of spontaneity and individual character, reflecting the aesthetic values of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The characters are arranged with a focus on rhythm and spatial harmony, typical of the high-level literary culture maintained by the imperial court.
