A woodblock print from the 'Album of Flowers and the Moon' by Kawamura Kihō, featuring silhouetted figures framed by architectural elements.
This woodblock print originates from the 'Album of Flowers and the Moon' (Kagetsu jō), a collection by the Japanese artist Kawamura Kihō. Kihō was a student of the Shijō school, which favoured a naturalistic approach to observation while maintaining the stylistic conventions of traditional Japanese ink painting. This specific composition demonstrates the artist's interest in silhouette and negative space.
The image presents a circular window frame, which acts as a secondary frame for the figures within. The silhouettes of two individuals are captured in a moment of interaction, their forms rendered with minimal detail to focus on the gesture and posture. The surrounding architectural elements, including the tiled roof and the geometric lattice of the railing, provide a sense of place. To the right, a bamboo stalk is depicted with calligraphic brushwork, balancing the composition against the solid, dark mass of the rock formation on the left.
Kihō's work often reflects the aesthetic values of the late Edo period, where the interplay between light and shadow became a subject of artistic exploration. The print uses a monochromatic palette on paper, allowing the texture of the woodblock impression to remain visible. The inclusion of a red seal in the lower right corner serves as the artist's mark, confirming the provenance of the piece within the broader context of his published albums. This print offers a quiet, observational quality, typical of the Shijō school's focus on capturing fleeting moments of daily life or literary scenes with economy of line.
