A delicate Kacho-ga study of a quail among autumn grasses, painted by Tosa Mitsunari in the traditional Tosa school style.
This work belongs to the Tosa school, a lineage of painters who served the Japanese imperial court for centuries. Tosa Mitsunari, a prominent member of this tradition during the Edo period, produced works that adhered to the refined aesthetic of the Yamato-e style. This specific piece is a leaf from an album depicting birds and flowers, a genre known as Kacho-ga. The composition features a small quail positioned at the base of a cluster of autumn grasses and flowering plants. The bird is rendered with precise, delicate brushwork, capturing the texture of its plumage through repetitive, fine markings.
The background is treated with a gold-flecked wash, providing a neutral yet luminous setting that pushes the subject forward. The plants, including bellflowers and pampas grass, are painted with a focus on decorative clarity rather than strict naturalistic perspective. This approach is characteristic of the Tosa school, which prioritised balanced, elegant arrangements over the more dramatic or expressive techniques found in other contemporary schools. The use of mineral pigments on silk creates a soft, muted colour palette that has aged with a subtle patina.
In this painting, the artist demonstrates the technical discipline required of court painters. The lines are controlled and thin, defining the forms of the leaves and the bird with great economy. The composition is ornamental, designed to be viewed in an intimate, handheld format. By focusing on the quiet interaction between the fauna and flora, the work reflects the seasonal sensitivity common in Japanese art of the period. The surrounding border, featuring a textured, woven-style pattern, frames the central image, reinforcing its status as a curated object for contemplation. This print captures the quietude and technical precision of the original silk painting, preserving the balance between the gold-toned ground and the soft, natural colours of the subject matter.
