A stark, emotive lithograph by German Expressionist Walter Gramatté, depicting the psychological distress of a character from Gogol's literature.
This lithograph by Walter Gramatté, dated 1918, captures a scene from the literary world of Nikolai Gogol. The work depicts the protagonist Akaki Akakievich, a character defined by his social invisibility and eventual psychological collapse. Gramatté employs a stark, high-contrast aesthetic typical of the German Expressionist movement, using deep blacks and sharp whites to convey a sense of internal turmoil and hallucinatory distress.
The composition is claustrophobic. Akaki is positioned amidst shadowy, distorted figures that loom over him, suggesting the onset of a fever dream or a descent into madness. The artist uses aggressive, gestural mark-making to build the surrounding darkness, which presses against the central figure. The lines are not merely descriptive; they are emotive, reflecting the psychological weight of the subject matter. The distortion of the facial features and the elongated, reaching hands contribute to an atmosphere of existential anxiety.
Gramatté was deeply involved in the Berlin art scene during the aftermath of the First World War, a period marked by social upheaval and personal trauma. His work often explored themes of suffering, mortality, and the human condition. This print, part of a series inspired by Gogol, demonstrates his ability to translate literary narrative into visual form through the medium of lithography. The texture of the ink, varying from dense, solid blacks to lighter, scraped areas, provides a tactile quality that enhances the sense of unease. It is a raw, unvarnished look at the fragility of the human psyche, rendered with the characteristic intensity of the era.
