Description
Aira Force draws the eye to its white cascade beneath a stone arch, with wooded gorge walls giving this Westmorland and Furness scene a cool, sheltered character.
Water drops in separate bright steps between dark slate-grey rock faces, then gathers in a shallow pool at the foot of the gorge. Mature trees close in from both banks, while a low masonry bridge cuts a firm horizontal line above the upper fall. Mossy boulders occupy the lower edge and soften the water's route through the ravine.
Aira Force is a familiar stopping point for people walking beside Ullswater or seeking shade on a warm day. The scene holds the sound and movement of the falls without leaving the path, and recalls the moment the bridge comes into view through the trees.
