A detailed fragment from Duccio's Maestà, depicting the sleeping apostles in a scene of quiet, human vulnerability.
This image is a detail from the Maestà, a large altarpiece commissioned for the Siena Cathedral. Duccio di Buoninsegna, a central figure of the Sienese School, painted this work between 1308 and 1311. The fragment depicts the sleeping apostles during the Agony in the Garden, a narrative moment from the New Testament.
Duccio employs a tempera technique on a wooden panel, characteristic of the period. The composition focuses on the physical weight and exhaustion of the figures. Their bodies are arranged in a dense, overlapping cluster, creating a sense of collective slumber. The drapery of their robes, rendered in shades of ochre, vermilion, and muted violet, provides structure to the scene. The gold leaf halos, though partially visible, suggest the spiritual nature of the subjects despite their human vulnerability.
Unlike the rigid stylisation common in earlier Byzantine art, Duccio introduces a degree of naturalism in the facial expressions and the varied postures of the apostles. Each figure occupies a distinct space, yet they are unified by the shared experience of sleep. The lines are precise, defining the folds of the fabric and the contours of the faces with clarity. This work demonstrates the transition in Italian art toward a more humanistic approach to religious subjects. The focus remains on the emotional state of the figures, captured through subtle gestures and the heavy, slumped positions of their bodies. As a fragment, it allows for a closer examination of the brushwork and the application of colour that define Duccio's contribution to the development of Western painting.
