This print by Mary Cassatt depicts two women sharing a quiet moment over tea. The soft colours and delicate lines create a sense of intimacy and domesticity, characteristic of Cassatt's Impressionist style.
Mary Cassatt, an American artist who spent much of her adult life in France, is known for her paintings, prints, and drawings that often depict the intimate lives of women, particularly mothers and children. Cassatt's work is characterised by its delicate lines, subtle colours, and focus on domestic scenes. She was deeply influenced by Japanese prints, which is evident in her use of flattened perspective and bold outlines. Cassatt was one of only three women to exhibit with the Impressionists in Paris. 'Afternoon Tea Party' is a colour print created between 1890 and 1891. It shows two women engaged in a quiet, domestic activity. One woman, dressed in a dark coat and blue bonnet, holds a teacup and saucer. The other, in a light-coloured dress, extends a saucer towards her. A tea service sits on a table between them. The composition is carefully balanced, with the figures arranged to create a sense of intimacy and connection. The colours are muted, with soft blues, pinks, and greys dominating the palette. The printmaking technique adds a textural quality to the image, enhancing its overall charm.
