A detailed study of an Egyptian woman in a field, painted by William Holman Hunt during his travels in the Middle East.
William Holman Hunt painted Afterglow in Egypt during his extended travels in the Middle East. The work depicts an Egyptian woman carrying a sheaf of wheat upon her head, accompanied by a green vessel and a collection of pigeons. Hunt travelled to the region to seek authentic settings for his religious and historical subjects, aiming to achieve a level of precision that he felt was absent in contemporary European art.
The composition features a woman standing in a field near the Nile. The light captures the specific atmospheric conditions of the Egyptian sunset, which gives the painting its title. Hunt applied his characteristic attention to detail, rendering the textures of the wheat, the fabric of the woman's garments, and the plumage of the birds with meticulous care. The frame itself is an integral part of the work, featuring decorative motifs that complement the scene.
This painting reflects the Victorian interest in the Near East, a subject that occupied many artists of the period. Hunt spent several years refining the image, ensuring that the colours and lighting effects met his exacting standards. The figure of the woman is presented with dignity, and the inclusion of the birds adds a sense of movement to the otherwise static pose. The work remains a primary example of the artist's dedication to empirical observation and his desire to ground his narratives in physical reality. It is a study of light, form, and the cultural environment of mid-nineteenth-century Egypt, executed with the technical rigour associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement.
