A late Tonalist masterpiece by George Inness, capturing the soft, diffused light and atmospheric mood following a summer rainstorm.
George Inness painted After a Summer Shower in 1894, the final year of his life. This work captures a fleeting atmospheric condition, a hallmark of his mature Tonalist style. The composition is dominated by a soft, diffused light that follows a rainstorm, with a faint rainbow arching across the sky. Inness prioritised mood and emotional resonance over precise topographical detail, using a palette of muted greens, ochres, and grey-blues to unify the scene.
The foreground features a grassy field with a solitary, weathered tree, its form silhouetted against the hazy distance. The brushwork is loose and painterly, suggesting the dampness of the air and the texture of the foliage without relying on sharp outlines. A small farmhouse is visible in the background, partially obscured by the mist and the atmospheric haze that characterises the artist's later output. By this stage in his career, Inness had moved away from the detailed realism of the Hudson River School, preferring instead to explore the subjective experience of nature through colour harmony and tonal gradation.
The painting reflects the artist's interest in the spiritual qualities of the natural world, a theme he pursued through his study of Swedenborgian philosophy. The light in the painting does not merely illuminate the objects, but seems to emanate from within the atmosphere itself. This approach creates a sense of quietude and introspection, inviting the viewer to observe the subtle shifts in light and weather. The work remains a primary example of how Inness manipulated paint to evoke the transient nature of the American countryside, focusing on the sensory experience of a specific moment rather than a literal transcription of the scene.
