This abstract work by Helen Frankenthaler showcases her signature soak-stain technique, with delicate washes of colour creating a sense of lightness and airiness.
Helen Frankenthaler (1928-2011) was an American abstract expressionist painter. She is known for her contributions to the development of colour field painting, a sub-genre of abstract expressionism. Frankenthaler's work is characterised by its lyrical abstraction and the use of the soak-stain technique, where she poured thinned paint onto unprimed canvas, allowing the colours to soak directly into the fabric. This method created luminous, translucent effects and blurred the boundaries between colour and ground. 'Aerie' exemplifies Frankenthaler's approach. The composition features delicate washes of colour, primarily in shades of red, green, and blue, against a white background. The forms are suggestive of natural elements, such as foliage and water, but remain non-representational. The thin lines and fluid shapes create a sense of movement and spontaneity. The overall effect is one of lightness and airiness, evoking a sense of open space.
