A masterful Baroque depiction of the Adoration of the Shepherds by Bernardo Strozzi, featuring dramatic chiaroscuro and intimate, realistic characterisation.
Bernardo Strozzi, a prominent figure of the Genoese Baroque, demonstrates his mastery of light and shadow in this depiction of the Adoration of the Shepherds. The composition focuses on the central figure of the Virgin Mary, whose gentle expression and posture guide the viewer towards the infant Christ. The child lies in a humble manger, illuminated by a soft, internal glow that contrasts with the surrounding darkness. This use of chiaroscuro is characteristic of the period, drawing inspiration from the dramatic lighting techniques popularised by Caravaggio.
To the right, a shepherd holds a bird, a detail that introduces a sense of rustic realism to the sacred scene. The figures are arranged in a tight, intimate grouping, creating a sense of quiet reverence. Strozzi employs a palette of deep, earthy tones punctuated by the muted red of the shepherd's cap and the subtle blue of Mary's mantle. The brushwork is fluid, allowing for soft transitions between light and shadow, which gives the figures a tangible, three-dimensional quality.
Strozzi spent much of his career in Genoa and later Venice, where he absorbed the influence of Venetian colourists. This work reflects that synthesis, combining the dramatic contrasts of the early Baroque with a sensitivity to texture and form. The painting avoids excessive ornamentation, choosing instead to focus on the emotional weight of the encounter between the divine and the humble. The presence of the cherub in the lower left corner adds a layer of traditional iconography, linking the earthly participants with the celestial realm. This print captures the depth of the original oil painting, preserving the subtle gradations of light that define Strozzi's approach to religious narrative.
