A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Albert Flamen depicting a group of needlefish on a sandy shore, rendered with precise cross-hatching.
This etching by Albert Flamen depicts a cluster of needlefish, or garfish, resting upon a sandy shore. Flamen, a Dutch artist who spent much of his career in France, produced a series of prints documenting various species of fish and birds. His work is characterised by a precise, observational approach to natural history, often placing specimens within a recognisable coastal setting.
In this composition, the fish are arranged in a central pile, their elongated bodies and pointed snouts creating a rhythmic, overlapping pattern. The artist employs fine cross-hatching to define the texture of the scales and the subtle curvature of the fish. The background features a calm sea with small sailing vessels and a distant shoreline, providing a sense of scale and environment. The inclusion of shells in the foreground adds to the coastal narrative, grounding the subjects in their natural habitat.
Flamen was known for his technical skill in etching, using the medium to capture the delicate details of his subjects with clarity. This print, marked with the Roman numeral VIII, belongs to a larger collection of marine studies. The inscription at the bottom, 'Admos. Lesquille de Mer', identifies the species in the vernacular of the period. The presence of the phrase 'cum priuil. Regis' indicates that the work was produced under royal privilege, a common practice for printmakers in the seventeenth century to protect their intellectual property. This piece offers a glimpse into the scientific curiosity of the era, where the systematic study of the natural world was documented with artistic rigour.
