A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever depicting Adam tilling the earth with the assistance of a skeletal figure of Death.
This engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever, a prominent member of the Little Masters, depicts a sombre allegorical scene. Adam, the biblical progenitor of humanity, is shown engaged in the arduous labour of tilling the soil. He is accompanied by a skeletal figure representing Death, who assists him in guiding the plough. In the background, Eve sits with their children, providing a stark contrast between the cycle of life and the inevitability of mortality.
Aldegrever was heavily influenced by the technical precision of Albrecht Dürer, a connection visible in the meticulous cross-hatching and the controlled line work throughout the composition. The artist employs a dense, textured approach to the foliage and the figures, creating a sense of weight and gravity appropriate for the subject matter. The inclusion of the monogram at the top centre is characteristic of his practice, identifying the work as a product of his workshop in Soest.
This print belongs to a broader tradition of memento mori imagery common in sixteenth-century German art. By placing Adam, the first man, alongside Death, Aldegrever comments on the human condition following the Fall. The physical exertion of the figures is rendered with anatomical focus, while the surrounding environment is stylised to frame the central action. The work demonstrates the technical capacity of the period to convey complex theological and philosophical narratives through the medium of small-scale engraving. It remains a clear example of the Northern Renaissance interest in moralising themes, executed with the discipline and clarity that defined the Little Masters' output during this era.
