A traditional Japanese woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunkō depicting the kabuki actor Tamazawa Saijiro in a female role.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunkō depicts the kabuki actor Tamazawa Saijiro in an onnagata role, which is the traditional performance of female characters by male actors. Shunkō was a student of Katsukawa Shunshō and became known for his yakusha-e, or actor prints, which focused on the specific facial features and expressions of performers rather than the idealised, generic faces common in earlier ukiyo-e works.
The composition features the actor standing beneath a flowering cherry branch. The figure wears a dark green kimono adorned with a pattern of cherry blossoms and circular motifs, layered over a pink undergarment. The artist uses a refined line to define the actor's posture and the folds of the heavy fabric. The background remains minimal, allowing the focus to remain on the actor's costume and the subtle expression of the face. The colour palette relies on muted greens, soft pinks, and pale yellows, which are characteristic of the printing techniques used during the mid-Edo period.
Katsukawa Shunkō was particularly noted for his ability to capture the individual likeness of actors, a style that moved away from the flatter, more decorative approaches of his contemporaries. This print demonstrates his attention to the details of the kabuki stage, from the specific hair ornaments to the layered construction of the kimono. The work provides a view into the aesthetic conventions of the 18th-century Japanese theatre, where the art of the actor was documented through these mass-produced prints. The print is a representative example of the Katsukawa school's contribution to the development of realistic portraiture within the ukiyo-e tradition.
