A refined woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō depicting the actor Segawa Kikujirō holding a calligraphic scroll, rendered in the traditional hosoban format.
This woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō captures the actor Segawa Kikujirō in a moment of performance. Bunchō was active during the mid-Edo period and became known for his yakusha-e, or actor prints, which often utilised a narrow format known as hosoban. This specific work demonstrates the artist's ability to convey character through posture and gesture, rather than relying on exaggerated facial expressions.
The figure is depicted in a graceful, slightly leaning pose, holding a long, unrolled handscroll inscribed with calligraphy. The kimono features a repeating leaf pattern, rendered with a restrained palette that allows the delicate line work to remain the primary focus. The artist employs a subtle use of colour, typical of the period, where soft tones are applied to define the fabric and the scroll. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the scroll echoing the slender frame of the actor.
Bunchō worked alongside Katsukawa Shunshō, and their collaboration on the book 'Ehon Butai Ōgi' remains a significant record of the theatrical styles of the time. This print reflects the aesthetic values of the Ukiyo-e school, where the ephemeral nature of the floating world was documented through the lives of popular performers. The print is an example of the technical precision achieved by carvers and printers working under the direction of the artist, ensuring that the fine lines of the hair and the fluid strokes of the calligraphy were preserved in the final impression. The work provides a glimpse into the visual culture of 18th-century Edo, where the theatre and the print market were closely linked.
