A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō, depicting the kabuki actor Sanokawa Ichimatsu within a fan-shaped composition.
This print depicts the kabuki actor Sanokawa Ichimatsu, a figure of considerable fame in eighteenth-century Edo. The work originates from the series Yakusha Butai Ogi, or 'Actors on Stage Fans', a collection of designs intended for mounting onto folding fans. Ippitsusai Bunchō, a master of the yakusha-e genre, captures the actor in a moment of dramatic stillness. The composition is constrained by the fan shape, forcing the figure into a dynamic, angular posture that reflects the stylised nature of kabuki performance.
Bunchō employs a refined, calligraphic line to define the actor's features and costume. The focus remains on the expressive quality of the face and the precise handling of the actor's posture. By stripping away extraneous detail, the artist directs the viewer toward the specific characterisation of Ichimatsu. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the period, where the woodblock medium allowed for clean, sharp contours that define the subject against the negative space of the fan. The inclusion of the actor's name and the artist's signature within the composition provides a clear identification of the subject, typical of the promotional nature of such prints in the Edo period.
As a piece of Ukiyo-e, this work provides insight into the intersection of theatre and visual culture in Japan. The fan format was a popular medium for disseminating images of popular performers, allowing fans to carry portraits of their idols. The simplicity of the black-and-white ink application emphasises the graphic strength of the design, ensuring that the actor's presence remains clear even when the fan is in use. This print is a representative example of Bunchō's ability to balance the requirements of commercial design with the artistic demands of portraiture.
