Shunkō, a student of Katsukawa Shunshō, was known for his focus on the physical presence of kabuki performers. His work moved away from the idealised portraits of his predecessors, favouring a more grounded representation of the actor's features and posture.

The composition centres on the figure of Danjūrō, who stands with a firm, grounded stance. He wears a patterned outer garment, or haori, featuring a geometric design that contrasts with the simpler lines of his hakama trousers.
