A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu, depicting the kabuki actor Arashi Kiyosaburo in the role of Yaoya Oshichi.
This woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu depicts the kabuki actor Arashi Kiyosaburo in the role of Yaoya Oshichi. The work belongs to the benizuri-e tradition, a style of early colour printing that utilised a limited palette, typically pink and green, applied to the monochrome ink base. Masanobu was a significant figure in the development of the ukiyo-e genre, often credited with innovations in print format and composition during the mid-eighteenth century.
The figure is rendered with the characteristic elegance of the period, focusing on the stylised posture and the elaborate patterns of the kimono. The actor holds a basket of flowering branches, a visual shorthand often associated with the character of Oshichi in theatrical lore. The lines are precise and fluid, demonstrating the technical control required for early multi-block printing. The composition remains relatively flat, prioritising the decorative arrangement of the costume and the graceful silhouette of the actor over three-dimensional space.
As a yakusha-e, or actor print, this work served as a form of celebrity portraiture for the theatre-going public of Edo. The inclusion of the actor's name and the specific role identifies this as a promotional piece for a theatrical production. The print retains a sense of historical immediacy, capturing the aesthetic preferences of the Genroku and post-Genroku eras. The use of negative space around the figure draws attention to the subtle application of colour, which has aged to a soft, muted tone. This piece offers a clear view into the technical evolution of Japanese printmaking before the full-scale introduction of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, later in the century.
