This work is part of a series by Sakai Hōitsu, a prominent figure of the Edo period Rinpa school. The composition captures a specific seasonal activity, reflecting the traditional Japanese focus on the passage of time and the rituals associated with the lunar calendar. Hōitsu, who was a member of the Himeji domain aristocracy, became a Buddhist monk later in life, a transition that often informed the contemplative nature of his later output.

The visual arrangement employs a characteristic Rinpa approach, utilising negative space to create a sense of atmospheric depth. The figures are rendered with precise, controlled brushwork, their garments providing blocks of colour against the muted, golden-toned silk background.
