A woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro depicting Act Four from the famous kabuki play *Kanadehon Chushingura* (The Treasury of Loyal Retainers).
This woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) depicts Act Four from the famous kabuki play *Kanadehon Chushingura* (The Treasury of Loyal Retainers). Utamaro was a leading designer of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and is best known for his portraits of beautiful women (bijin-ga). He also produced prints of actors and scenes from popular plays. *Kanadehon Chushingura* tells the story of the Forty-seven Ronin, a group of samurai who avenged the death of their lord. The play was first performed in 1748 and quickly became one of the most popular works in the kabuki repertoire. Act Four focuses on the character of Enya Hangan, who is forced to commit suicide after drawing his sword in Edo Castle. In this print, Utamaro captures the drama of the scene with his characteristic attention to detail. The figures are rendered with delicate lines and subtle colours. The composition is carefully balanced, and the overall effect is one of restrained emotion.
