A seventeenth-century etching by Simon Guillain depicting a street vendor carrying a portable display case, part of a series documenting urban trades.
This etching by Simon Guillain, dated 1646, depicts a street vendor known as an Acoramaglietti. The work belongs to a series documenting the diverse trades and street figures of seventeenth-century Rome. Guillain, a French sculptor and printmaker, captures the figure with a focus on the physical reality of the vendor, who carries a portable display case filled with small wares, likely trinkets or sewing notions. The vendor is shown in motion, his posture suggesting the daily labour of navigating city streets to find customers.
The technique employs varied hatching to define the form of the figure and the texture of his clothing. The background remains minimal, which directs attention to the vendor and the specific apparatus he carries. The etching reflects the interest of the period in documenting social types, a practice that provided a visual record of urban life. The inclusion of the plate number in the lower corner indicates its origin as part of a larger collection or series intended for wider circulation. The print offers a glimpse into the economic life of the era, where itinerant merchants were a common sight in European capitals. Guillain uses clear, deliberate lines to render the details of the vendor's attire, from the cap to the breeches, while the display box is rendered with enough precision to suggest its function and construction. This piece is a representative example of how printmaking served as a medium for social observation during the Baroque period, capturing the mundane aspects of existence with technical clarity.
