A detailed 1775 engraving by Domenico Cunego depicting the dramatic scene from the Iliad where Achilles drags the body of Hector.
This print by Domenico Cunego reproduces a composition by Gavin Hamilton, a Scottish painter who spent much of his career in Rome. The work depicts a dramatic episode from Homer's Iliad, where the Greek hero Achilles drags the body of the Trojan prince Hector behind his chariot. The scene is rendered with the precision characteristic of eighteenth-century reproductive engraving, capturing the tension of the narrative through carefully modulated line work and tonal contrast.
Achilles stands upright in his chariot, his posture conveying authority and anger. His horses are shown in a state of agitation, their manes flowing as they pull the vehicle across the plain. Below, the body of Hector lies on the ground, connected to the chariot by ropes. To the right, figures observe the event from the walls of Troy, their gestures expressing grief and horror. The composition follows the conventions of Neoclassical history painting, which prioritised clarity, anatomical accuracy, and the depiction of moral or heroic themes drawn from classical literature.
Cunego was a skilled printmaker, often employed to translate the works of contemporary painters into engravings for a wider audience. This particular print was produced after an original painting held in the collection of the Duke of Bedford. The engraving technique allows for a wide range of greys, from the deep shadows of the chariot wheels to the lighter tones of the sky and the figures. The print serves as a record of the original painting, reflecting the aesthetic values of the period, which favoured structured compositions and the study of antique forms. The inclusion of Latin and English text at the base identifies the subject matter, ensuring the viewer understands the classical source of the drama.
