A dramatic Baroque depiction of the biblical banquet of Absalom, characterised by intense tenebrism and emotional narrative tension.
Mattia Preti, a Calabrian painter active during the seventeenth century, demonstrates his mastery of the tenebrist tradition in this depiction of Absalom's Feast. The narrative, drawn from the Second Book of Samuel, captures the moment of tension during the banquet where Absalom commands his servants to murder his half-brother, Amnon. Preti organises the composition around a crowded table, using the dramatic interplay of light and shadow to direct the viewer's focus across the chaotic gathering. The figures are rendered with a sense of urgency, their gestures and expressions conveying the sudden shift from celebration to violence. Preti employs a palette dominated by deep earth tones, punctuated by the warm, saturated reds of the garments worn by the central figures. This use of colour helps to anchor the composition, preventing the dense arrangement of bodies from becoming illegible. The background remains largely obscured in shadow, a technique that heightens the theatrical quality of the scene and emphasises the psychological weight of the betrayal. Preti spent much of his career in Naples and Malta, where he absorbed the influence of Caravaggio and his followers. This painting reflects that stylistic lineage, particularly in the handling of light, which acts as a structural element rather than a mere illumination of the scene. The figures exhibit a physical presence typical of the Neapolitan school, with heavy drapery and expressive, often weathered, faces. By focusing on the human reaction to the impending act, Preti creates a narrative that feels immediate and visceral. The work remains a fine example of the dramatic storytelling that defined the Baroque period, where the artist sought to engage the viewer through emotional intensity and technical precision.
