A sixteenth-century Italian woodcut depicting the biblical narrative of Abraham and Isaac, characterised by fine hatching and a decorative border.
This woodcut by the anonymous printmaker known as Master PR depicts the biblical narrative of the Binding of Isaac. The composition centres on Abraham, who stands with a raised sword, prepared to fulfil his divine command. Isaac is positioned before him, kneeling in submission. The artist employs a dense system of hatching to define the figures and the surrounding terrain, creating a sense of volume within the restricted space of the woodblock medium.
The scene is framed by a decorative border, a common feature in sixteenth-century Italian printmaking. This border provides a structured contrast to the dramatic action occurring within the central field. The background includes stylised clouds and a palm tree, elements that suggest a Mediterranean setting while maintaining the graphic conventions of the period. The artist, identified by the monogram PR, demonstrates a clear grasp of anatomical proportion and narrative clarity, typical of the small-scale devotional prints produced for a wider audience during the Renaissance.
Technically, the work relies on the contrast between the white of the paper and the black ink lines. The artist uses varied line weights to suggest texture, from the rougher strokes of the rocky ground to the smoother contours of the figures. The inclusion of the monogram in the lower right corner confirms the attribution to the hand of Master PR, an artist whose identity remains a subject of study among historians of early modern print culture. This print offers a view into the visual language of the period, where religious themes were translated into accessible, portable formats for private contemplation or collection.
