A charcoal study by Willem Bastiaan Tholen depicting a young boy reading by lamplight, capturing a quiet moment of domestic intimacy.
Willem Bastiaan Tholen, a prominent member of the later Hague School, demonstrates his mastery of light and shadow in this charcoal study. The composition captures a quiet, domestic moment: a young boy, identified by some scholars as Paul Arntzenius, is absorbed in a book by the glow of a table lamp. Tholen uses the medium of charcoal to create a soft, atmospheric quality, allowing the darkness of the room to press in against the small pool of illumination provided by the lamp.
The artist focuses on the contrast between the bright pages of the book and the surrounding gloom. His handling of the charcoal is sensitive, using varied pressure to suggest the texture of the boy's shirt and the soft focus of the background. The lamp itself, with its pleated shade, acts as the primary light source, casting a distinct shadow behind the boy and defining the contours of his face and hands. This work reflects the Dutch tradition of interior genre painting, where the focus remains on the intimacy of everyday life rather than grand narratives.
Tholen was known for his ability to render the nuances of light, particularly in his depictions of interiors and maritime scenes. In this drawing, the economy of means is evident. He does not overwork the paper, preferring to let the grain of the surface contribute to the overall texture. The boy's posture, hunched slightly over the open volume, conveys a sense of concentration and stillness. This piece provides a glimpse into the private world of the late nineteenth-century Dutch middle class, where reading was a primary form of evening leisure. The work remains a fine example of Tholen's technical skill and his interest in the quietude of domestic spaces.
