A detailed 16th-century engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicting a mythological scene of childbirth, framed by classical decorative motifs.
This engraving by the Italian artist Giulio Bonasone depicts a scene of childbirth, framed within an elaborate architectural and decorative border. The central narrative shows a woman in labour, reaching out for divine assistance, while attendants assist in the delivery. The composition is structured with a clear focus on the human figures, surrounded by classical motifs including putti and grotesque masks, which were common elements in the Mannerist period.
Bonasone, active in Bologna, was known for his technical skill in engraving, often reproducing works by other masters or creating original compositions based on classical themes. The inclusion of Italian text at the base of the print serves as an invocation to Juno Lucina, the Roman goddess of childbirth. The text translates to a prayer for the goddess to be propitious and to oversee the birth. The surrounding frame, with its heavy ornamentation and balanced symmetry, provides a structured contrast to the dynamic, emotive scene of the birth itself.
Technically, the work demonstrates the precision of sixteenth-century printmaking. The use of cross-hatching and fine lines creates depth within the drapery and the figures, while the decorative border adds a sense of formal containment. This print is part of a series exploring mythological and allegorical subjects, reflecting the period's interest in classical antiquity and human experience. The work remains a fine example of the intersection between religious or mythological devotion and the technical mastery of the Italian printmaking tradition.
