A woodblock print by Shōtei Hokuju depicting the Senju Great Bridge, featuring precise lines and a calm, muted palette.
Shōtei Hokuju, a student of Katsushika Hokusai, produced this woodblock print during the early nineteenth century. The work depicts the Senju Great Bridge, a location of historical importance on the Nikkō Kaidō road. The composition employs a Western-influenced perspective, which was a characteristic feature of Hokuju's output. The bridge spans the foreground, creating a clear horizontal line that guides the viewer across the river.
Small figures traverse the bridge, while boats navigate the water below. The artist uses a restrained palette, relying on muted blues, earthy browns, and soft greys to define the scene. The trees on the right side of the frame provide a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal bridge, framing the view of the riverbank. The sky is rendered with simple, horizontal cloud formations, maintaining a sense of calm.
Hokuju is known for his interest in geometric structure and spatial depth, elements that distinguish his work from many of his contemporaries. This print captures the daily activity of the region, showing the bridge as a functional element of the local infrastructure. The thatched-roof buildings and the surrounding vegetation suggest a rural setting, despite the proximity to the bustling city of Edo. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, with clean lines and controlled colour application.
