A detailed 1773 etching by Jean-Jacques de Boissieu depicting the historic Ponte Lucano near Tivoli, capturing the Roman countryside with precision.
Jean-Jacques de Boissieu, a French artist from Lyon, produced this etching in 1773. The work depicts the Ponte Lucano, a historic bridge situated on the Via Tiburtina near Tivoli. This location was a frequent destination for artists during the eighteenth century, as the ruins of the Roman countryside offered a subject for those interested in the intersection of antiquity and rural life.
The composition features the fortified tomb of Plautius, a cylindrical structure that dominates the background. Boissieu employs a precise etching technique to render the textures of the stone masonry, the foliage of the trees, and the ripples of the Aniene river. In the foreground, figures are engaged in daily activities, providing a sense of scale and human presence against the backdrop of ancient architecture. The artist balances the structural weight of the bridge and the tomb with the softer, organic forms of the surrounding vegetation.
Boissieu was known for his dedication to the printmaking medium, often working directly from his own drawings made during his travels. His approach to light and shadow creates a clear sense of depth, guiding the viewer from the riverbank towards the distant hills. The inclusion of a dedication to the Duc de la Rochefoucauld at the base of the print reflects the social context of print collecting during this period, where such works were often commissioned or presented to patrons of the arts. This print captures a specific moment in the history of the Italian landscape, documenting the appearance of the site before later restorations altered its character. The fine lines and cross-hatching demonstrate the technical skill required to achieve such tonal variation in a monochrome medium.
