A meticulously detailed floral still life by Jan van Kessel the Elder, 'A Swag of Flowers Fixed with Two Blue Ribbons' showcases a vibrant assortment of flowers and insects against a dark backdrop, secured by two striking blue ribbons.
Jan van Kessel the Elder, a Flemish artist born in Antwerp in 1626, specialised in small-scale paintings of subjects from the natural world. He came from an artistic family; his mother was the daughter of Jan Brueghel the Elder, and his father was Hieronymus van Kessel the Younger. Van Kessel is known for his meticulous technique and scientific accuracy, reflecting the period's growing interest in natural history. 'A Swag of Flowers Fixed with Two Blue Ribbons' exemplifies his detailed approach. The painting depicts an array of flowers, including roses, tulips, irises, and snowdrops, arranged in a semi-circular swag against a dark background. Two large blue ribbons secure the floral arrangement at the top. Butterflies and other insects are scattered throughout the composition, adding to the painting's sense of life and movement. The artist's skill is evident in the precise rendering of each flower and insect, capturing their textures and colours with remarkable fidelity. The dark background enhances the luminosity of the flowers, creating a dramatic contrast that draws the viewer's eye.
