Samuel Peploe (1871-1935) was a Scottish artist, and one of the four artists known as the Scottish Colourists. These painters were inspired by Post-Impressionism and Fauvism, movements that emphasised bold colour and simplified forms. Peploe is particularly known for his still life paintings, as well as his landscapes of Iona. His work often features a limited range of subjects, explored repeatedly with variations in composition, light, and colour. This still life presents a vase of roses set on a table, accompanied by a cup and saucer, and a book or letter. The composition is simple, but the execution is expressive. Peploe's brushstrokes are loose and visible, giving the painting a sense of immediacy. The colours are muted, yet harmonious, with soft pinks and greens contrasting against the darker background.
