This print by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), a Japanese artist of the Edo period, exemplifies the Ukiyo-e style. Hokusai is best known for his woodblock print series 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji'. He also produced a large body of work including paintings, drawings, and book illustrations. His work influenced many Western artists, particularly Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. 'A Snow-clad Landscape with Gray Clouds' presents a tranquil winter scene. The composition is divided into three horizontal bands: the foreground with snow-covered hills and a small cottage, the middle ground with a body of water, and the background with distant mountains obscured by grey clouds. The colour palette is restrained, dominated by pale greys, whites, and subtle greens, which evoke the coldness and quiet of a winter day.
