A raw and emotive 1918 etching by German Expressionist Walter Gramatté, depicting a puppet show with characteristic psychological intensity.
Walter Gramatté, a figure within the German Expressionist movement, produced this etching in 1918. The work captures a scene of a puppet show, rendered with the raw, emotive line work characteristic of his graphic output. Gramatté often explored themes of human suffering, isolation, and the psychological weight of the post-war period in Germany. His approach to the medium of etching is direct, utilising jagged, nervous lines to construct the figures and the surrounding space.
The composition features a puppeteer positioned above, manipulating a small figure, while a larger, melancholic character occupies the foreground. The contrast between the active, perhaps sinister, puppeteer and the weary, downcast expression of the foreground figure suggests a commentary on control and agency. The heavy hatching and cross-hatching techniques create a sense of texture and shadow, adding to the unsettling atmosphere of the scene. Gramatté’s work from this period reflects the broader anxieties of his generation, moving away from traditional representation toward a more subjective, internalised vision of reality.
This print demonstrates the artist's technical proficiency with the etching needle, allowing for a spontaneity that mirrors the psychological intensity of the subject matter. The figures are distorted, their features exaggerated to convey a sense of unease. By focusing on the mechanics of the puppet show, Gramatté invites the viewer to consider the relationship between the observer and the observed, as well as the fragility of the human condition. This piece remains a representative example of the graphic art produced in Berlin during the late 1910s, where artists frequently turned to printmaking as a means of rapid, expressive communication.
