The composition is structured with geometric precision, utilising angular planes and a fragmented perspective that reflects the influence of Cubism. A priest stands at the centre, elevating the host, while figures in religious habits kneel in the foreground. To the left, a soldier in armour stands as a sentinel, creating a visual tension between the spiritual act and the colonial presence. The background features stylised hills and a flag bearing the cross, rendered in muted, earthy tones that ground the scene in a specific, albeit abstracted, geography.

Portinari often focused on the social and historical narratives of his home country. In this work, he balances the solemnity of the religious ritual with a formal rigour that prioritises shape and light.
