A striking portrait by South African modernist Gerard Sekoto, capturing the character of a school teacher with expressive brushwork and a balanced colour palette.
Gerard Sekoto, a pioneer of South African modernism, produced this portrait during his formative years in the urban centres of South Africa. The work depicts Omar, a school teacher, captured with a directness that characterises much of Sekoto's output from the 1940s. The artist employs a palette of earthy tones, contrasted against the cool blue of the subject's shirt and the background elements. His application of paint is deliberate, focusing on the structural planes of the face to convey a sense of presence and individual character.
Sekoto moved to Johannesburg in 1938, where he began to document the lives of people in the townships. This period was marked by his shift towards a more expressive, figurative style. He moved away from the academic traditions of the time, opting instead for a visual language that prioritised the humanity of his subjects. In this portrait, the lighting accentuates the contours of the face, drawing attention to the subject's steady gaze. The composition is tight, focusing entirely on the head and shoulders, which creates an intimate connection between the viewer and the sitter.
By choosing to paint ordinary individuals, such as teachers and workers, Sekoto provided a visual record of a community often overlooked by the art institutions of the era. His work is noted for its clarity and its rejection of sentimentality. This print captures the texture of the original oil paint, preserving the brushwork and the subtle gradations of colour that define Sekoto's approach to portraiture. It remains a significant example of his ability to combine formal modernist techniques with a focus on the social realities of his environment.
