A striking Baroque allegory by Bernardo Strozzi, featuring a winged personification of Fame rendered with dramatic light and fluid brushwork.
Bernardo Strozzi, a central figure of the Genoese Baroque, painted this allegorical work during his productive period in Venice. The composition features a winged female figure, the traditional personification of Fame, holding a long trumpet. Her posture is relaxed yet commanding, with her gaze directed towards the viewer. Strozzi employs a dramatic use of light and shadow, a hallmark of the period, to model the figure against a dark, atmospheric background.
The artist demonstrates his technical skill through the handling of textures. The heavy, lustrous folds of the yellow skirt contrast with the delicate white fabric of the blouse and the metallic sheen of the trumpet. Strozzi's brushwork is fluid and confident, allowing for a sense of movement within the static pose. The figure's expression is calm, suggesting a quiet authority rather than an overt display of triumph.
This work reflects the Venetian influence on Strozzi's style, particularly in his use of colour and the soft, painterly application of pigment. The palette is dominated by warm ochres and deep blues, set against a neutral, dark ground. By focusing on the physical presence of the figure, Strozzi creates an image that is both grounded and ethereal. The inclusion of the trumpet serves as the primary iconographic element, identifying the subject while providing a diagonal line that guides the eye across the canvas. This painting remains a clear example of Strozzi's ability to blend classical allegory with the naturalism characteristic of seventeenth-century Italian painting.
