A classic sumizuri-e woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu, depicting a lively street scene in Edo-period Japan through precise black ink lines.
This woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu captures a slice of daily life in Edo-period Japan. As a prominent figure in the development of Ukiyo-e, Masanobu was instrumental in refining the techniques of the era. This work, executed in the sumizuri-e style, relies entirely on black ink lines printed on paper, without the addition of colour. The composition presents a street scene where various figures engage in their daily routines. A porter carries a heavy box, while others move through the space with purpose. The artist employs a clear, linear approach to define the architecture and the figures, creating a sense of order within the busy urban environment.
Okumura Masanobu was known for his experimentation with perspective and his ability to document the social fabric of his time. His work often focused on the inhabitants of Edo, from common labourers to members of the samurai class. In this print, the inclusion of two swords on the figures to the right identifies them as samurai, providing a contrast to the working-class individuals carrying goods. The architectural elements, such as the wooden structures and the water barrel, provide context for the setting. The print demonstrates the artist's skill in using line weight to suggest texture and form, from the folds in the kimono fabric to the wooden grain of the containers. This piece offers a direct view into the social dynamics of 18th-century Japan, documenting the varied activities that defined the urban experience. By focusing on the mundane, Masanobu provides a record of the period that remains accessible and informative for the modern viewer.
