A satirical lithograph from the Les Bons Bourgeois series, capturing a humorous domestic dispute between neighbours in nineteenth-century Paris.
This lithograph belongs to the series Les Bons Bourgeois, a collection of satirical prints by Honoré-Victorin Daumier published in the French journal Le Charivari. Daumier, a master of social observation, captures the petty grievances of the Parisian middle class during the July Monarchy. The scene depicts a man leaning over his balcony, looking upward with an expression of intense irritation as water drips down from a neighbour above. The humour lies in the absurdity of the situation: the neighbour is watering plants on an upper floor, and the water descends onto the man below, who is clearly distressed by this minor inconvenience.
Daumier employs his characteristic lithographic technique, using fluid, expressive lines to define the figures and their exaggerated facial expressions. The composition is structured vertically, creating a clear connection between the source of the water and the victim below. The artist avoids excessive detail, focusing instead on the body language of the protagonist, whose posture conveys a sense of indignant helplessness. The print reflects the artist's keen eye for the mundane frustrations of urban life, transforming a trivial domestic dispute into a humorous commentary on human nature. The inclusion of the series title and the caption at the bottom provides the necessary context for the viewer, framing the image as a narrative vignette. This work demonstrates Daumier's ability to distil complex social dynamics into a single, accessible image, a skill that defined his career as a political and social commentator in nineteenth-century France.
