A serene view of a Long Island lake featuring two swans, captured in the soft, atmospheric style of American Impressionist William Merritt Chase.

William Merritt Chase was a central figure in American art during the late nineteenth century. Known for his technical facility and his role as an educator, he frequently turned to the surroundings of his summer home in Shinnecock Hills, Long Island, for inspiration. This work captures the quiet atmosphere of a local lake, rendered with the soft, atmospheric qualities characteristic of his pastel technique. The composition is structured around the reflective surface of the water, which occupies the centre of the frame. Two white swans glide across the surface, providing a sense of scale and movement. Chase employs a palette of cool blues and greens, punctuated by the bright white of the birds and the warm, earthy tones of the foreground foliage. The brushwork, or rather the application of pastel, is fluid and light, allowing the texture of the paper to contribute to the overall effect of dappled sunlight and gentle ripples. Chase was an early proponent of the plein air method in the United States. He often encouraged his students to observe the subtle shifts in light and colour that occur throughout the day. In this piece, the artist avoids rigid outlines, preferring to define forms through the juxtaposition of colour and tone. The trees on the far bank are suggested with loose, gestural marks, creating a sense of distance and depth. This approach reflects his training in Munich and his subsequent engagement with the Impressionist movement. The work remains a fine example of his ability to elevate a simple, everyday scene into a study of light and atmosphere, demonstrating his command over the medium of pastel to achieve both clarity and softness in his depiction of the natural world.
