William Merritt Chase was a central figure in American art during the late nineteenth century. Known for his technical facility and his role as an educator, he frequently turned to the surroundings of his summer home in Shinnecock Hills, Long Island, for inspiration. This work captures the quiet atmosphere of a local lake, rendered with the soft, atmospheric qualities characteristic of his pastel technique. The composition is structured around the reflective surface of the water, which occupies the centre of the frame. Two white swans glide across the surface, providing a sense of scale and movement.
