This oil on canvas painting by Bernardo Bellotto depicts a Hussar on horseback, set against a detailed cityscape. The artist's attention to detail is evident in the rendering of the horses' musculature and the soldiers' uniforms.
Bernardo Bellotto (1722-1780) was an Italian urban painter, also known and signing himself as Canaletto, as his uncle Giovanni Antonio Canal was known. Bellotto was born in Venice, and became a pupil of his uncle. He also worked in Rome, Florence, Verona, and Milan. After his uncle's style had become popular, Bellotto made an independent career in several European cities, including Dresden, Vienna, and Warsaw. 'A Hussar on Horseback' presents a mounted soldier in elaborate attire, accompanied by another rider and a dog, set against a detailed cityscape. The composition balances the foreground figures with the distant architectural elements, creating a sense of depth and scale. The artist's attention to detail is evident in the rendering of the horses' musculature and the soldiers' uniforms. The soft, diffused light enhances the atmospheric perspective, contributing to the overall sense of realism.
