A detailed etching by Nicolaes Berchem, capturing a goat and a ram with precise line work and naturalistic observation.
Nicolaes Berchem was a prominent figure in the Dutch Golden Age, known for his technical skill in etching and his focus on pastoral subjects. This work depicts a goat standing behind a recumbent ram, rendered with the precise observation characteristic of his animal studies. Berchem often travelled through the Italian countryside, and his work reflects a synthesis of Northern European realism and the Mediterranean light he encountered during his travels.
The etching demonstrates Berchem's ability to capture the texture of animal coats through varied line work. The ram, resting in the foreground, is defined by dense, short strokes that suggest the thickness of its wool. In contrast, the standing goat is depicted with longer, flowing lines that convey the texture of its coarser hair. The composition is simple, placing the animals against a minimal background to ensure the viewer focuses on their anatomical form and posture.
Berchem produced numerous series of animal etchings, which were highly collected during the seventeenth century. These prints were often used as reference material by other artists and students of drawing. The signature 'Berighem f.' appears in the lower left, a common variation of his name found on his printed works. The work is an example of the Dutch interest in the natural world, where the depiction of livestock was elevated to a subject worthy of careful artistic attention. The print maintains a balance between scientific observation and the aesthetic conventions of the period, providing a clear view of the animals without unnecessary ornamentation or narrative distraction.
