A surreal etching from Max Klinger's A Glove series, featuring a single glove resting on a pedestal amidst a repetitive, dreamlike backdrop.
Repose is the eighth plate from the cycle titled A Glove (Paraphrase on the Finding of a Glove), a series of ten etchings by Max Klinger. This work displays the artist's fascination with the psychological and the uncanny. The composition is structured with a rigid, almost theatrical symmetry. A single glove rests upon a delicate, wrought-iron pedestal in the centre of the frame. Behind this object, a row of identical gloves hangs like curtains, creating a repetitive, rhythmic pattern that borders on the absurd.
The framing of the image is particularly notable. Two vertical columns of dense, floral ornamentation flank the central scene. These decorative elements contrast with the stark, minimalist arrangement of the gloves. Klinger uses clean, precise lines to define the forms, avoiding excessive shading to maintain a sense of clinical detachment. The work functions as a visual narrative, though it resists a singular, logical interpretation. It invites the viewer to consider the object as a fetish, a relic, or a stage prop in a dreamlike sequence.
Klinger was a significant figure in the transition between nineteenth-century realism and the later development of surrealism. His ability to render mundane objects with such specific, unsettling intent influenced many artists who followed. This print demonstrates his technical skill in etching, where the economy of line serves to heighten the strange atmosphere of the scene. The repetition of the hanging gloves creates a sense of order that is simultaneously comforting and bizarre. By isolating the glove, Klinger elevates a common accessory into a subject of intense scrutiny. The work remains a curious example of how graphic art can manipulate space and expectation to create a narrative that exists entirely within the mind of the observer.
